I realize that I've been living in denial for some time now concerning my Mother's condition and status. This is strange because she's been living with me for years now, and as her primary caregiver you'd think that I would be the person most in-tune with what her condition is/has been.

My Mother, Phyllis, is the third known generation of women in her family with what is referred to as 'early onset Alzheimer's Disease'. My great-grandmother, grandmother and mother all began to exhibit small signs of what was to come before age 60. I didn't really and truly see the issue for myself until my Mother was about 62 years old, but with hindsight we know that she must have been hiding a lot from those of us around her. She is now 69 years old.

About a month ago, and after a large seizure, Mom went from fairly functional at home to dwindling in a nursing home. It's been the hardest time of my life. I have had to make decisions that she did not set in place for me long ago. And, this week, the terrible burden is to choose whether to give her a feeding tube, or not to give her one. She has refused to eat for over three weeks now and is losing weight. In the Alzheimer's patient, the ability to eat is a late-stage symptom. Probably her brain has shriveled away in that area that tells you to be hungry and to eat.

It's funny how different the scenario is just one generation after my Grandmother's passing. 20 years ago, there were no Alzheimer's drugs to be had. You simply took the long, slow deterioration of the mind. But, my Mother had the benefit of taking Alzheimer's medications. It made a huge difference for her. People often have the mistaken idea that the drugs 'help your memory'. This is not true. Once the disease sets in and damage is done, there's no coming back from it. However, the medications made my Mother's progression very different. She stayed at a level ability to function for much longer than her own Mother. That's why this quick month of decline is hard for me. I expected a slower decline. And, it feels like it's 'snuck up on me'.

The pros and cons of the feeding tube/lack thereof are neither pleasant. There's no one decision that sticks out as the better option. At first, I thought, "There is no way that I will starve her by not giving her a feeding tube." However, after some education at the hands of medical care specialists, I am not so sure that a surgical procedure (which she may not be strong enough to survive) and the potential complications from the tube are humane either? Especially when they can never be resuscitated back to something better. Still, how do I make this decision either way and be confidant in it? Life certainly can be unfair and impossible sometimes.

It must be decided soon because as she becomes more malnourished, she could slip into cardiac arrest. I have to choose if I can deal with, and accept that. Pray for me...

I really liked this Alzheimer's graphic, made to advertise a statistic, created by Graphic Designer Ethan Bennett.

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-78031557965504694342010-01-25T22:22:00.003-05:002010-01-25T22:33:54.891-05:00what a horrid start to the new year<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFRWKsz1CmbD9YeVgOwNtkVrV6cio3XUW-GqphCDNkAwHGOD514bDYgeVgECgjgreMyOcit0_jlAN5UplXn0Nagd9G9YC9SYXYwtNzjo0E93dLrIFXmdLFnNgfhyv607BFRWPP7cPh5Zg/s320/philafl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430886630936032530" />
I have had all of these great intentions to get my original patterns finished and online, and to simply blog more regularly, etc. Yet, the new year is off to a horrid start. As some of you know, I am caregiver to my Mother who has early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. I've known for a long time now that it has become time to find her a facility that can give her the kind of specialized care that I can no longer give her. However, Friday night she had a seizure here at home and had to be hospitalized. The general feeling of her doctors are that she needs to be transferred directly from the hospital to said facility as soon as her medications are stabilized.

Funny how many ups and downs your emotions go through during this process. In some ways I think it's a blessing in disguise that it is happening this way, because I could never imagine having to deliver her, personally, to a nursing home. And, though I know it's for HER own good, it's heartbreaking to think that she was just here and active and now she's not coming back home. My head has made the decision and made peace with it, as well. But my heart isn't prepared.

Seems as though I am in limbo. I don't have the focus to channel my grief through other outlets. Even my crafting, which normally would be 'therapy', is not something I can focus on. I guess it's just going to take me some time?

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-681172454685561352009-12-29T03:30:00.005-05:002009-12-29T03:34:35.158-05:00Resolution...I'm striving to do a better job of posting in 2010, in addition to finally getting my original patterns written and added to my blog. I've been stuck in a huge crocheting phase for more than half of 2009, and have lately been itching to get back into my knitting (which is actually my stronger suit)!

Coming soon is a quick crochet, broomstick lace neck warmer pattern, as well as a few other freebie offerings. Please return soon for some small, freebie projects.

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-44977485640919531562009-12-10T22:27:00.006-05:002009-12-10T22:37:09.289-05:00the 'after-Blogtoberfest' highs and lows...I just can't seem to get myself together. It's been a 'blah' month. There was a bright, shiny moment yesterday when I received my last Blogtoberfest giveaway from Tinniegirl. It was LOVELY - inspirational cards and a mix tape! - and as soon as my camera battery is charged, I plan on blogging a photo. Thanks so much, Cathy! It made my day...week...month!

Maybe the blahs are because it's officially winter now here. 'Here' is Ohio, USA. We had our first snow day before yesterday, and it's so cold out there this evening that when I walked my dog, Lola, around the block I came back a popsicle!

I am JUST SO CLOSE to being finished with that school bus scarf. Just dragging my feet on sewing on the tires and embroidering a bus number. And, I've been doing some granny-square crafting. More pictures coming on that soon, too.

I'll go and have another listen to that great mix tape and think of warm Australia/New Zealand, and my new blogger friends!

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-26168517150529392502009-12-03T05:57:00.010-05:002009-12-03T06:11:21.492-05:00crazy days<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 110px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTtE0m1LX1BmiSY2pBFqc8k0wcm81lsJxLbYnEJfVsrRROs8Ra3Z1PRBsUZOMIzElp-OPSKn0VmmTO30NUDku2Mkfh3c_ei0US3EailnKkoehvF6u6YX5yaWxonsWKhkn-SORBeEzTGOA/s320/bus_20scarf_20sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410962865472716498" />
It's been a rather crazy month for me. There's been a lot of sadness. Two funerals within one month - not to mention the ongoing caretaking here - have really been taxing. Just this week, I found out that a man that I worked with for several years (only 48 years old) had a heart attack and passed away. He had 5 children, at least three of which were still living at home and school-aged. Now, I know that when someone passes, we have a tendency to praise for all the good which that person possessed. But, John truly was that person who lived an exemplary life. He taught his children by example how to be a compassionate and kind human being. He was soft-spoken yet strong when it mattered. And, I always had the utmost respect for his integrity. The world is less somehow without him. I'll miss him.

With all of this mental strife, I really have let the arts/crafting moments slip by. I'm 'stalled'. The most recent thing that I've been working on for a relative who is a school-bus driver is this scarf, right. Pattern at The 8 Track Knitting Diva's blog.

I still have ideas for some original patterns in the works, and hope to have them up for the coming year. Hope that all of my blog friends are safe and sound during this month of holidays/indulging.

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-9819179597101050572009-11-22T23:04:00.003-05:002009-11-22T23:53:57.040-05:00thank you thank you<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMG_pZPt-sV1-aidXyhFb7Mdsdd5OSq2r8saqOVvLNMDY5Z4C8riyHlxybqxbo1a6tjnoSUJf9O9f3yZ3rGaNBPIzIIwPvmQuxzER9elmy7sJnWAV8vdspn8SgO1swDj_f2Z83IdgcXEk/s320/loot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407145370115476690" />
a HUGE thanks to Kate at Bib and Tucker for the lovely hand-spun yarn. I had an absolutely dream-fulfilling Saturday (Oct. 31, 2009) when I went to see the Broadway touring version of RENT in Cincinnati, Ohio. Original RENT performers Adam Pascal, top, and Anthony Rapp are on tour with the group, which is the part I always dreamt of...hearing the two of them perform the material in person! It was pretty fabulous! They were just great. I've been humming the music all week.

And, I've enjoyed painting on my Dayton mural this week. It's nearly finished. So close now.

However, this evening, I found out that I lost a very dear old friend. Her name was Oveda, but our whole family called her Aunt Beets. Where the nickname originated, I don't know. I'm sure it was born before I was. Oveda was in her 90s, and I knew that one day I'd be surprised by her passing and that it would be sudden. But, it's very painful right now. She was not my Aunt by blood. Rather, she was the Aunt of one of my Aunts, by marriage. I always remember her kind, gentle nature and how she crafted with me on occasion at her home when I was a child. In recent years, she and I could discuss poetry and books. She was a very beautiful and intelligent lady and I'll miss her greatly.

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-73199761467338209422009-11-02T00:14:00.003-05:002009-11-02T00:24:29.728-05:00FINALLY...there's a winner!I want to apologize to all my new followers, and readers, out there. I'm going to see the (former Broadway) musical RENT in Cincinnati, Ohio! I'd be happy enough to see the production with off-Broadway actors, but this particular traveling production will showcase two of the male leads from the original Broadway show, Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp! I am very excited! It should prove to be a wonderful show. More on that later.

Check back for my giveaway winner tomorrow!

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-14530671778550555942009-10-28T02:20:00.003-04:002009-10-28T02:23:40.306-04:00the superpops challenge!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVML7-ET3KzS-97jgjO5lATY04wTo5BxGCpQz6WS8wjUInwleaZpHW8Zxu06vB8bVsJ4gaghotoeg4FeWzoA6UzUmHuduyTc5qJ5C9C1xkC7UgfhPkzuj1kCxEeu6b0mOeOSQ4F45BER0/s320/superpopsCOZY.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397532416362738610" />
I am thrilled to have finished my SuperPops entry today. That is how this blog describes the shared works of some crafters-led-astray. I say this, but I confess that I am itching to generate some of this "knitted graffiti" (known as KNITTA, see right)--perhaps near my new mural in Dayton?

There is everything from the macabre to the downright disgusting on this site. For the sake of humor or curiousity, it is a fun discovery. But, I don't think I'd be using any tutorials off of this blog! hehe I mean who could resist this Bozo sweater? (below)

Arthur and I had a very fun night with friends on Thursday. The trip to the comedy club was great. I needed the laughs. There has been much more stress lately with respect to Mom's Alzheimers care. I want to keep her home forever, but logic set in this week and I know that for both her sake and mine, I may have to look into options for placing her in a facility that can give her better care. It's really a no-win, and very depressing. It was nice to have an evening where I didn't have to think about such things.

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-69622834255101247242009-10-23T05:17:00.001-04:002009-10-23T05:18:59.190-04:00funny night out<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP9BRGQXyApfAfYSjxYa7iUmWtHYblzHCVUif9m9_Si25CTFhruj1Ipji27boJwSgMXGbc7X_mwZNqVAUAx0HaR9x7pfoJD3_lu2T5YJgyckq4rR9gCOC-kS5mUu7EAHkpHcQsCfnDyes/s320/heywoodFUNNYbone.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395722225205030866" />
We had a great time at the Heywood Banks show last night! It was a little cold outside, but I arrived mid-afternoon when it was warmest. I met my wall neighbor, Heather. She was creating this wonderfully colorful and cheery, sunshiney piece. And, I find that her style is much like mine, so our murals will look nice next to one another.

On the other side of Heather, her boyfriend Richard was creating the next work over. His is a spray-painted piece with very abstract, free-form and colorful accents. They both were very nice and we had great fun painting together. I think the best part was when Richard found a baked potato on the mean streets of downtown Dayton...lol...ah, city living and the trash that comes with it.

Next time out, I'm taking a broom ; )

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-91651866830035237912009-10-18T03:53:00.003-04:002009-10-18T03:58:03.164-04:00more muraling!I'm very excited to begin my mural in downtown Dayton, Ohio tomorrow! If you missed the introduction, see my link to that day's blog.

I picked up my paint today, and some brushes, and I am anxious to put paint to the wall. Approximately half of the 10 artists involved in the project have already begun. I went by the site while acquiring my paint and saw some LOVELY work in the other panels, so it's becoming more real and exciting all the time!

There should be pictures tomorrow, and more to share from my project.

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-72820192385095776692009-10-17T00:52:00.008-04:002009-10-17T01:10:40.108-04:00its a mural blogtoberfest<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 298px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwCl7yoqQhu2gk_pB9trHQk0Jrp-dlnQd5ks45c52QY1FbfchgCYGPLn2HoU6adRkLp1ar8T3jDBRra2ne7ViQvJbRrRlj7HJNUU4DlG7ei2NqKpJcRdbpu9N-mgl9hHPt8bctEMBPbcc/s320/zebras.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393428417976895938" />
Three babies coming in my family! I've been knitting and crocheting gifts, and getting excited about the new arrivals!

My cousin Kelli, and her husband Dallas, are expecting baby boy "Anthony" in just about three weeks! I've made her some fiber gifts, but I am also painting some safari animals in Anthony's nursery. Today was session number two of my painting, and I finished the zebra mother/baby. I think it's looking very good thus far! We decided, mutually, that we'd keep the animals a little more realistic rather than so cartoonish. It just seems that the mural can follow the child for more years if the style is not so babyish. They have some beautiful dark wood furniture. You can see the arched top of the crib in front of the zebras, above right.

Kelli is a nurse, and she tells me that babies see primarily in black & white when newborn. Therefore, I thought the zebras would be appropriate for little Anthony to gaze upon while laying in his bed.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 116px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicOY5ejrGmew-mrGhtavKXGbVBBIEj0gjNTPnO0KFhsnGoYk4Mm-ijozE7VZPwylsVgY5uCXQUt4AA-D_kqmtBOxu-Ygur25kAiFRpsAb1prBDQLGq6DKAnLfL6dlY15iljBe59MJYyD8/s200/acacia.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393430928230837506" />Left, a small pict of session number one's detail...an acacia tree. There MUST be a monkey! lol

This weekend, I plan to start my outdoor mural in Dayton. Brrrr! It was in the 40s (farenheit) today! Let's hope for a warmer Sunday!

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-6667184614731552952009-10-15T02:24:00.011-04:002009-10-15T02:55:11.541-04:00the bangles...<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 237px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2UtswdT-QwyHSg6EROVSXAHR6HoJ4xGC6mIsq_kpzE7aerfzKN5kRe612-HNECPMUopdr_wHpKXdImxAcf5sEazy1x4xhOU0-mtB7LGnGmbSy1xuVAt_c7goDckKS75nlSrggL-rr8Lo/s320/bracelets1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392710183698609746" />
Ah, the 80s...they are making a comeback. Maybe not the music, exactly, so I wouldn't expect to hear the Bangles "Walk Like An Egyptian" anytime soon...unless you're listening to the classic new wave station of your choice?

However, after a brief stop in the craft store this afternoon, I was drawn to a malleable plastic (called "Friendly Plastic") of a very flashy nature. Simply melt in the oven and mold. After a few failed attempts (mostly to do with finding a surface on which to melt the plastic without fusing it to my ovenware - FYI...I used a Silpat mat non-stick cooking mat), I came up with a couple of turquoise and gold cuff bracelets that had an 80s edge. I had such fun with it as it's a super-quick medium to work with, with little clean-up.

Playing with the plastics reminded me of that other favorite technique from yesteryear...Shrinky Dinks. I had to go have a look at their Web site! Their question/answer page gives some excellent feedback on how, now, to use Shrinky Dinks in photocopiers and laser printers!

My brain is just aflutter with ideas for plastic crafts! I have a feeling I'm not finished with the acrylic just yet! *Hearing the Bangles in my head*

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-72145819809671419732009-10-14T03:23:00.010-04:002009-10-14T04:17:50.292-04:00giveaways galoreI've been so excited to get involved in this Blogtober-festival! The giveaways have been fabulous and gorgeous pieces, and they've certainly inspired me to get more creative! So, whether I 'win' a freebie or not, I've already won!!!

Today, I was admiring giveaways from moo bear designs and GemmaJoy - who has created some wonderful pen and ink sketches of major U.S. cities. They're contemporary and well worth checking out. Each piece of her work is completely original as well! No repeats!

Then, there are the sites at which I just learned new things, like Judy's Bento Box, where there are some very cool ideas for nutritious and serving-appropriate meals, particularly for lunch.

So, keep blogging out there, and thanks for the great inspiration!

Ohio, USAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13469492591870878391noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7828092824328299445.post-10144291173288291812009-10-13T01:55:00.027-04:002009-10-14T03:06:47.727-04:00beautification and blogtoberfest...The excitement is really beginning to swirl this week as I prep for the start of my mural in downtown Dayton!

Though we were asked to primer our walls before painting, someone was kind enough to do them all last week. I showed up on Sunday, and it was finished! Yay! (The priming is never the fun part...lol)

I should explain that the mural is all part of a city beautification project. New flower boxes and street improvements are to be added in the vicinity. The streets in question intersect at an overpass for a train trestle, the underside of which houses 10 individual inset panels - 5 on each side of the four-lane street. WHEW! That was a boring mouthful! lol

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA9XTHdLjNdPxqCmRZ3qknjHK-jISDvtpeW8OUT1pYjY3hHkCYKkmko5RSCKta9tsv46w9rV1b51N5gXYbW3a45_xa9j30pQjPua3Wy3qd1c1A4EOk1qjUzjJHHv100JhhQsYN4QlhjiA/s320/cleanslate.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392338427662922322" />Pictured, right, is the blank canvas. 10 artists were selected, each to have his or her own panel. That means one 8'x8' square is my responsibility.

Unveiling of finished murals is currently slated for November 6, but due to delays on the part of the beautification committee, the date may be pushed back. Either way, I want it done asap!

Project theme was "garden". I'll not post my submitted design. Rather, I'll surprise you with the 'in-progress' photos.

Below, is a small detail of Dayton's "Garden Center". This small park and garden area sits right next to the overpass, and exactly to the right of my 'canvas'. The plot is a space for gardeners and artists to share a love of growth and recycling. Local artists have donated sculpture and mural services in the garden, over time, and it's a very unique piece of land in the middle of a metropolitan area.

More details to come after the weekend!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFa0S_9m6ey2fT4iiXdnZpmjF8Wt73wyMDft7x67enD7ogeV2IaLNf2GiZ4aKdj_-ZoPry6qL-X8xff1w3K13wB-Z005DOdznoajC08hTEWSLuSUZdU4FdflxnF_fsrfkrtZC4KGSDGv4/s200/gardenstationsandbd.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392334919474643714" />THE GIVEAWAYS
In the meantime, news of two giveaways that I submitted to today: a "surprise" giveaway from Blake and Boo makes two! Great idea for 'Blogtoberfest'! Very mysterious.

And, gorgeous kimono print fabrics at little tweetheart blog.
